The Role of Learning Support Services in University Students’ Educational Outcomes

LSS tutors are trained and certified
In addition to making a meaningful impact on UCSC’s undergraduate student community, Learning Support Services provides tutors with professional training and certification opportunities grounded in national and international peer educator standards. Our program equips peer educators with skills in student-centered learning, communication, and academic support.

College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Level 1 and Level 2 Certified
CRLA certification is a nationally recognized credential for peer tutors. For Level 1, tutors complete at least 10 hours of training and 25 service hours. For Level 2, tutors complete at least 20 hours of training and 50 service hours. This certification demonstrates that our training ensures tutors are prepared to support student learning using research-based, student-centered strategies.

International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) Accredited Program
Supplemental Instruction Accreditation recognizes programs that follow the standardized SI framework. This accreditation requires certified training for coordinators, adherence to the SI model, and structured peer leader engagement. SI leaders are highly trained by LSS in best practices.
